What is the thyroid gland ?

The thyroid gland is situated on Ventrolateral side of trachea below the larynx in the neck.
It is brownish red and somewhat larger in female.It is H or Butterfly shaped.It produces hormones i.e. teteraiodthyronine (T4) and triiodthyronine (T3), which are two primary hormones that control how your cells use energy in the body. Thyroid gland regulates metabolism rate in the body through the release of the hormone. When hormone levels in the body becomes too low or too high that time you may experience a wide range of symptoms.In India 42 million peoples suffer from thyroid diseases.

Thyroid disorders :

A) Hyperthyroidism : The hyper secretion of thyroxine (T3 & T4) is called Hyperthyroidism.

Causes :

  • Grave's disease :Characterised by enlargement of thyroid, protruding eye ball.
  • Exopthalmic goiter : Characterised by increase in size of thyroid gland. Worldwide,over 90% goiter cause by iodine efficiency.

Symptoms :

  • Deposition of fats in eye sockets and shows protruding eyeball.
  • Body weight reduced
  • Muscular weakness
  • High metabolism rate
  • Rapid heart rate
  • Sweating of body
  • Frequent bowel movements
  • Hair loss
  • Irregular menstrual cycle
  • Elevated blood pressure
  • Itching
  • Higher body temperature
  • Inability to concentrate
  • Nausea etc.

B) Hypothyroidism : The less secretion of thyroxine in body is called Hypothyroidism.


Causes :

  • Simple goiter  (Endemic goiter) : It occurs due to deficiency of iodine in drinking water and diet.
  • Myxoedema : It is disease of adult due to hyposecretion of thyroxine.

Symptoms :

  • Weight gain
  • Joint & Muscle pain
  • Lump in the neck,sometimes growing quickly
  • Pale, dry skin
  • Body temperature low
  • Constipation
  • Lower body metabolism rate
  • Lower heart rate
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Hoarseness or Voice changes
  • Trouble swallowing
  • Cough constant
  • Skin dry, puffy or thick
  • Mental dullness
  • Loss of memory
  • Hair loss
  • Feeling tired, depressed etc


If above symptoms you may felt then convey with this your family concern else specialist doctor for taking early stage care & precaution from doctor to treat the thyroid and avoid if symptoms may felt.
